Section 12: Concerning Moral Issues

A. Concerning Abortion

We believe that human life begins at conception and that the unborn child is a living human being; that the abortion of unborn children (with the exception of saving the physical life of the mother) is an act of murder and, as such, is a crime against God and man. We reject any teaching that abortions of pregnancies due to rape, incest, birth defects, gender selection, birth or population control, or the mental well-being of the mother are acceptable (Job 3:16; Psalms 51:5; 139:14-16; Isaiah 44:24; 49:1, 5; Jeremiah 1:5; 20:15-18; Luke 1:44). We also believe there is complete forgiveness for the truly repentant individual guilty of this sin; and that the nation that permits this atrocity invites upon itself the certain judgment of Almighty God.

B. Concerning Euthanasia

We believe God is the creator of all life; that power over life and death belongs to Him alone; that God alone can rightfully terminate or order the termination of life. We believe the taking of human life in what is called euthanasia constitutes a violation of the sanctity of human life and of divine prerogatives; and that this termination of life premised upon the false notion of quality of life (2 Corinthians 4:16, 17; 12:8, 9) and/or other human whims constitutes the crime of committing murder (Genesis 1:26; 9:6). We do not believe withholding or removing life support systems ordinarily constitutes an act of euthanasia.
C. Concerning the Marriage Covenant and Sexual Immorality
We believe the intimacy of a husband and wife is a picture of the still greater intimacy of Christ with the church (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:23-32; Revelation 19:7, 8); that marriage is intended by God to be a wonderful gift and blessing to both men and women (Proverbs 18:22). We also believe God has commanded no intimate sexual activity should be engaged in outside of the marriage covenant between a man and a woman; that the Scriptures clearly teach the practice of premarital sex, adultery, incest, homosexual and bisexual acts, pornography and all other sexual sins are hated by God as sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex; and as such they are totally incompatible with the Christian life and service in the local Church. We also believe those who are truly repentant are completely forgiven (Genesis 2:24; 19:5, 13; 26:8-9; Leviticus 18:1-30; Romans 1:26-29; I Corinthians 5:1; 6:9, 11; I Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4).
D. Concerning Divorce and Remarriage
We believe that marriage is a divine institution and God intends marriage to last until one of the spouses dies. We believe divorce is a distortion of God’s intention for marriage. Although divorced and remarried persons or divorced persons may hold positions of service in the local church and be greatly used of God for Christian service, they may not be considered for the office of pastor or deacon. (Malachi 2:14-17; Matthew 5:31-32; 19:3-12; Romans 7:1-3; 1 Timothy 3:2, 12; Titus 1:6)

E. Concerning Gender Distinction

We believe the role and function of men and women in society, the family, and the church are defined in terms of God’s created order as revealed in the Scriptures namely, that there is a prescribed order of authority — God is head of the man and man is the head of the woman (1 Corinthians 11:3-16); that the role and function of the sexes are distinctly different; that though they differ in role and function, both are equal in worth, dignity, and spiritual privilege (Galatians 3:28; 1 Peter 3:7); and that based on the foregoing principles and teachings, women are prohibited from exercising authority over the Church and thus from assuming the Pastorate (1 Corinthians 14:34, 35; 1 Timothy 3:2, 12).
F. Concerning Civil Lawsuits
We believe in the context of the local Church, Christians are prohibited from bringing civil lawsuits against other Christians or the Church to resolve personal disputes, and that the Church possesses all the resources necessary to resolve personal disputes between individual members, and between members and the Church. (1 Corinthians 6:1-8)
